On the lookout for Bird Nests in Knotweed

Erik Kiviat PhD, Executive Director, Hudsonia Ltd. is collecting data on bird nests in knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum s.l.) stands.

This is the time of year when you can easily see meters into a stand, even while driving roads. Typically a nest looks like a big clot of plant matter about 50-250 cm above the ground.

If you see evidence of a nest in or beneath knotweed please send Erik photos or notes and you will be happily acknowledged in his paper!

Says Erik, “I should mention that I have records from New Jersey to Montreal, mostly
in New York, and reports from Vermont, but nothing from the Midwest,
Northwest, Europe, or East Asia yet.”
