Full Moon Hike to Tremper Mountain

Full Moon Hike to Tremper Mountain

  • Tremper Mountain Trailhead Parking (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Hike with us under the light of the full moon!

This guided hike will offer stunning views of the Catskills under the moonlight and a unique opportunity to learn about the natural and cultural history of the area.

This event is FREE with a suggested donation of $10.00. Registration is required.

Meet-up Location:

We will meet up for this hike at Tremper Mountain Trailhead Parking right off Route 40/Mt. Tremper-Phoenicia Rd. The main parking area does not have the most space so carpooling is highly encouraged. Please plan to leave a note on your dashboard stating you are participating in the hike if you use any parking spots nearby that are not the Tremper Mountain Trailhead. We will meet up @ 6:00 PM and start the hike at 6:30, or earlier once everyone arrives.

Hike Itinerary:
The hike begins with a half-mile stretch of traditional rock and root trail that will see plenty of small ups and downs. Once we meet up with the main trail, we will follow an old service road for 1.7 miles before reaching our first break spot at the spring along the trail. While the Catskill Mountains have some very fresh water, there is a privy located up the mountain from the water source, so treatment or filtration is recommended for those who have been recently considered immunocompromised or have had issues in the past.

The final 0.85 miles of the trail will contain some of the steeper sections, given that it will be one of the hotter months in New York, we will continue once everyone feels comfortable. Before reaching the fire tower there will be a shelter if anyone needs another place to rest after the final stretch. The views from the fire tower are some of the most beautiful in the Catskill Park at night time and highlight how relatively low the light pollution is across the Park. The trip back will allow for a second break at the water source for anyone who needs any additional fluids. From that rest stop down to the parking area we will not stop until we reach the end.

What to Bring:

  • Water (1-2 Liters as needed. There is a spring to draw from but there is a privy located further up the mountain, filtration or treatment is recommended for drawing from this source)

  • Snacks

  • Headlamp (cell phone lights will not suffice)*

  • Insulation - light insulation is recommended in case of wind

  • Trekking Poles (If needed, there will be some steep sections)

  • Hiking Boots or Shoes (trail runners are acceptable, just make sure your footwear can handle a rocky trail as it is not a completely smooth walk)

*If you do not have a headlamp you will not be allowed to take part in this hike.

Hike Starting Time and Location:
The meeting time for the hike will be 6:30 PM and we will begin 7:00 PM, or earlier once everyone arrives. The hike will begin from the newer Parking Area, located at 2205 Denning Rd, Claryville, NY 12725. This parking area has space for several cars but carpooling is recommended.

Hike Itinerary:

Starting from the Denning Rd Trailhead, we will ascend the newly constructed Red Hill trail up to the fire tower. Full Moon Hike to Overlook Mountain

  • Overlook Mountain Trailhead Parking (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Hike with us under the light of the full moon!

This guided hike will offer stunning views of the Catskills under the moonlight and a unique opportunity to learn about the natural and cultural history of the area.

This event is FREE with a suggested donation of $10.00. Registration is required.

Hike Starting Time and Location:
The meeting time for the hike will be 6:30 PM and we will start the hike at 7:00 PM, or earlier once everyone is present. The hike will begin from the Overlook Mountain Parking Area, located at 353 Meads Mountain Road, Woodstock NY. It’s right across the road from the KTD Buddhist Monastery. There is an overflow lot further down along Macdaniel Rd which is the same road just by a different name after you pass by the Monastery. You can either walk the road back to the Overlook Mountain Parking Area or take one of the trails up from the overflow lot.

Hike Itinerary:

Overlook Mountains Trail follows an old road that used to lead to a Hotel near the top of Overlook Mountain. The first 2 miles of trail will be along this old service road with some spots to rest along the way. It is uphill for the majority of the hike so make sure you have some snacks and water to help you along the way. Once we reach the ruins of the old hotel, we will take a moment to check them out and take a nice breather.

The final half-mile push will be along a footpath leading up to the fire tower and viewpoint. There will be signs mentioning the Timber Rattlesnakes in the area, but they will not be in the trail since the sun will be getting ready to set by that time. We will be able to walk up the fire tower and get beautiful views of the nearby Devil’s Path, Kaaterksill High Peak, and the Hudson River Valley. We will then make our way over to the viewpoint which offers the best views as the moon rises above the Hudson River Valley.

The hike back down will be without any planned stops. If anyone needs a moment to rest, we can take time as needed, but the trip down will be just to get back down to the parking lot.

Items to Bring:

  • Water (1-2 Liters as needed, there are no reliable sources to draw from on this hike)

  • Snacks

  • Headlamp (cell phone lights will not suffice)*

  • Trekking Poles (If needed)

  • Hiking Boots or Shoes (trail runners are acceptable, just make sure your footwear can handle a rocky trail as it is not a smooth walk)

*If you do not have a headlamp you will not be allowed to take part in this hike.

Meet-up Location:

We will meet up for this hike at the Rusk Mountain Trailhead right off Spruceton Rd in West Kill, NY. If the parking lot is full, there is an additional lot about a minute further down the road on the right side. You can park there and walk back to the starting trailhead. We will be meeting @ 5:30 PM and the hike will begin at 6:00 PM, or ealier once everyone has arrived. *There is no cell service in the area, be sure to have your drive out of the area planned out or download the way back for offline use ahead of time.

This beginning section will have some steeper hiking right at the start but will offer some easier and more gradual sections as we move along. Once we reach the ascent up to the John Robb Lean-To, we will be at one of the steepest sections of the trail for a little over half a mile. At the pull-off for John Robb, the group will have the option of stopping by the shelter to get a nice view and to use the Privy. After that point, we will complete the final section which is a little over a mile until we reach the fire tower (1.3 miles). The Fire Tower area will have a nice field and open canopy to get nice views of the night sky and will offer beautiful views of the horizon from the Fire Tower itself.

We will head back the same way we came and will take our time on the steeper sections. We will have the option to stop and refill water from the spring for any who need it on the way down. We will not be stopping at the Lean-to on the way back to the trailhead to avoid disturbing any overnighters, however, if anyone requires the privy we will wait at the junction for anyone who would like to make the trip.

Items to Bring:

  • Water (1-2 Liters as needed. There is a spring to draw from about halfway along the trail, however it is generally recommended to filter the water in the Catskills, so either carry all of your water needs or bring a filter along with you)

First Day Hike with the Catskill Center: Huckleberry Point

Huckleberry Point Trail involves a somewhat challenging 5-mile round-trip hike, with a rewarding view before heading back to the trailhead. The trail has a few steep points of ascent and descent, along with a potentially challenging river crossing.

Difficulty Level: Moderate. This hike will include switches between gaining and losing elevation, rocky and rooted terrain with old service roads at the beginning, and some steep ascents & descents/minor rock scrambling at points. We will be moving at a brisk pace, so attendees are encouraged to be in good hiking shape. Although there is no age minimum for this hike, this hike is not recommended for novice hikers or those who have difficulty with steep terrain.

Special Instructions: Microspikes/Trail Crampons will be required. Snowshoes may be necessary depending on weather conditions. Headlamps may also be necessary. If any inclement weather is expected that will impact the trail's conditions negatively, the hike will be cancelled. Well-behaved pets are allowed on leash.

Time: This hike starts promptly at 1:00pm. Please arrive at least 15 minutes early. Hike will end around 4:30pm.

Meet Up Location*: Huckleberry Point Trailhead, 2425 Platte Clove Road, Elka Park, NY 12427

*For any who are concerned about the seasonal closure of Platte Clove Rd, the section that is closed will be to the east, leading up the ridge from West Saugerties. To avoid this closure, plan to approach the area by traveling through Elka Park, located northwest of the Trailhead.

Advance registration is required. Registration is free, with a suggested donation of $10. We look forward to ringing in the New Year with you!

Full Moon Hike to Hunter Mountain

5:30 PM17:30

Full Moon Hike to Hunter Mountain

Join Catskill Center staff David Hans for a guided hike to the summit of Hunter Mountain under the light of the full moon!

Meet-up Location:

We will meet up for this hike at the Rusk Mountain Trailhead right off Spruceton Rd in West Kill, NY. If the parking lot is full, there is an additional lot about a minute further down the road on the right side. You can park there and walk back to the starting trailhead. There will be a group stretch before starting to hike to ensure everyone is prepared for hiking the Catskill Park’s second tallest mountain. *There is no cell service in the area, be sure to have your drive out of the area planned or download the way back for offline use ahead of time.

Hike Itinerary:

The hike will begin by following the Spruceton Trail for a little over a mile and a half (1.7 miles).

  • Snacks

  • Headlamp (cell phone lights will not suffice)*

  • Insulation - Insulation is recommended in case of wind

  • Trekking Poles (If needed, there will be some steep sections)

  • Hiking Boots or Shoes (trail runners are acceptable, just make sure your footwear can handle a rocky trail)

*If you do not have a headlamp you will not be allowed to take part in this hike. Due to issues with having to assist hikers who did not have headlamps in the past, there will be NO EXCEPTIONS! You will also be turned away if you forget your headlamp, it only counts if it’s on your person so be sure you have it before you start driving.

Lighting of the Fire Towers

Lighting of the Fire Towers

The NYS Chapter of the Forest Fire Lookout Association is pleased to announce the 11th Annual Lighting of the Fire Tower Event! Saturday, August 31st at 9:00 pm we hope to have a light begin to shine in the cab of many towers across NYS! Last year we had so many wonderful volunteers that we were able to light 37 towers! We hope to increase that number this year. In the event of rain, the event will be held on Sunday, September 1st at 9:00pm.

The event is done to honor the men and women who worked in these historic towers; protecting homes, businesses, communities and surrounding forests. The plan is to place a light in fire towers around the state from 9 to 9:30pm. We invite people to go to locations around the community (listed on our website) where they can look up, see the light on the horizon and remember that there was a fire tower there watching over them.

HIKE FOR THE CATSKILLS: FULL MOON HIKE TO TREMPER MOUNTAIN
Aug

6:30 PM18:30

HIKE FOR THE CATSKILLS: FULL MOON HIKE TO TREMPER MOUNTAIN

Join our CVC Manager, David Hans for a guided full-moon hike to Tremper Mountain!

SUGGESTED DONATION: $10/PERSON AT REGISTRATION

The hike begins with a half-mile stretch of traditional rock and root trail that will see plenty of small ups and downs. This beginning section is more intense than many expect, so please prepare accordingly.

Items to Bring:

  • Water (1-2 Liters as needed.

Due to issues with having to assist hikers who did not have headlamps in the past, there will be NO EXCEPTIONS! You will also be turned away if you forget your headlamp, it only counts if it’s on your person so be sure you have it before you start driving.

HIKE FOR THE CATSKILLS: ECHO LAKE VIA OVERLOOK MOUNTAIN
Aug

10:00 AM10:00

HIKE FOR THE CATSKILLS: ECHO LAKE VIA OVERLOOK MOUNTAIN

Join our Catskill Visitor Center Manager, David Hans, for a hike to Echo Lake.

We will meet up for this hike at the Trailhead for Overlook Mountain, located opposite the Buddhist Monastery. There is additional parking further down the road at the Meads Meadow Parking Area, a large packed gravel parking lot marked by a sign on the side of the road. We will only wait 15 minutes for all attendees to arrive. If the main lot is full when you arrive, please stop and check in before going to the lower lot so we know to wait for you or your group.

The Hike will begin at the usual starting point for Overlook Mountain and follow the Overlook Spur Trail to begin. We will make our way up to the Overlook Mountain House Ruins. From here, attendees will have the option to cut their hike short if they aren’t feeling up to the remaining 6+ miles of hiking. The hike will then branch off from the Overlook Spur Trail and onto the Overlook Trail. This trail will descend for about a mile to the junction with Echo Lake’s trail. We will follow this trail from the junction along an old and rocky service road. Reaching the lake will be our midway point for this trip.

The hike back will be along the same trails we took in. The start of our return trip will include the longest ascent of the trip as we make our way back up Overlook Mountain. We will follow back the way we came until we reach the junction of the Overlook and Overlook Spur trails. From here, attendees can decide if they would like to make an additional trek up to the Fire Tower and Overlook Viewpoint or head back down. Following whatever decisions are made, the remainder of the hike will be back down the service road we started our hike on. Once we reach the Parking Lot, you will have completed one of the most invigorating and beautiful hikes in the Catskills

Items to Bring:

  • Water – 2 to 3 Liters as needed. There is no water to filter or treat until we reach Echo Lake, and that water MUST be treated or filtered before consumption.

  • Snacks & Lunch – Make sure to pack plenty of snacks and a lunch for this hike. Because of the extent of this hike, make sure you also have bags to store your trash.

  • Trekking Poles (If needed) – There are a few steeper sections but the trail is mostly rocky and has long sections of ascent and descent. Extended periods of elevation gain or loss can wear down muscles faster, please prepare accordingly.

  • Hiking Boots or Shoes – Trail runners are acceptable, just make sure your footwear can handle a rocky trail.

  • Bug Spray – While up on Overlook we might not have too many issues, Echo Lake is a big pool of stagnant water and has the potential to be buggy. (NOTE: You will not be allowed to swim in Echo Lake once bug spray is applied.)

  • Sunscreen – There will be sections with minimal to no canopy and high sun exposure. Please pack sunscreen as a precaution. (NOTE: You will not be allowed to swim in Echo Lake if you have applied sunscreen.)

This hike has a strenuous difficulty level.
